Jumbo Tours' Yuimaaru School Project

Due to the suppression of the educated class for over 20 years under the Pol Pot regime, there are still many children in Cambodia that do not have access to an adequate education.
Recently, due to donations from numerous individuals and groups, the number of schools has increased, however there is a large gap between urban and rural areas. Although the rate of school enrollment has been improving in rural areas, the graduation rate is still low.
One such rural area is Cockdawn County. There are currently 11 elementary schools there, but as there are no middle schools, children stop studying after graduating from elementary school. We have a strong desire to help these children continue their studies and help them achieve their dreams.

Thusfar we have built 2 elementary schools and 1 middle school in Cambodia as well as a high school to enable the children to continue their studies. In the next 5 years we would like to select 1 scholarship student for the opportunity to study about the Japanese tourism industry at the University of the Ryukyus.

We will provide full financial support and an environment where the student can concentrate on his/her studies. In the next 7 years we will have the student obtain a national license from the Cambodian government and train him/her to become an independent licensed guide.
It is our hope that such activities will contribute to increased social, cultural and economic exchange between Cambodia and Okinawa, as well as the further development of both places.

Planting Mango Seedlings from Okinawa
After the opening of Okinawa Yuimaaru Elementary School I in November 2006, our tour participants, school students, and the villagers have been planting mango trees. All of the students take care of the trees and harvest and sell the mango fruits. The proceeds are used to purchase pencils, notebooks, and other stationary items so that all children have access to stationary. Furthermore, we are also conducting volunteer work by spraying the mango trees that were previously planted with EM fertilizer from Okinawa. At the same time EM microorganisms are cultivated and used in the cultivation of the mangoes.
